Japan at 8.8 magnitude: PHILIPPINES ON ALERT LEVEL 2 according to PHIVOLCS

After the earthquake that strucked Japan at a magnitude of 8.9, PHIVOLCS are now advising residents in the east coast of the Philippines to evacuate. This places the Philippines on alert Level 2 according the PHIVOLCS which calls for mandatory evacuation in the said areas.

According to PHIVOLCS, Batanes Group of Islands will be the first to be hit. Next is in line is Cagayan, northernmost areas of Ilocos Norte, Isabela, and Quezon. The tsunami may hit the Philippines between 5:00pm to 7:00pm. Residents are greatly advised to evacuate the areas for safety purposes.

Simultaneously with Japan’s earthquake which happened today March, 11, 2011, minor quakes were also felt in New Zealand with a magnitude of 3.2, Mindoro, Philippines with a magnitude of 5.0 and certain parts of Hawaii at 2.6 Magnitude.

As of this time 1600H Philippines time, the whole Pacific Basin is advised for a Tsunami Watch except the Mainland USA and Canada. Albay area in the Philippines is advised to evacuate too due to a 1 meter estimated tsunami to hit the area. Australia, Fiji, Chile, and New Zealand is believed to be the first few countries to be hit by the tsunami aside from the Philippines. The tsunami is sustaining waves of 200km/hr as reported.
